Keywords are one of the most important elements of successful Internet marketing. Keywords and phrases are what people search for when they use Google. In order to optimize the content of your website for the search engines, you will need to use relevant keywords in every page of your site. This will ultimately help you to reach the first page of the results - the place where the vast majority of web traffic begins.

Keyword density is a common term in search engine optimization (SEO) which refers to the number of times that your keyword appears in your content, relative to the number of words in the page or article. If, for example, you have an article on your website of 500 words containing your chosen keyword five times, then the keyword density is exactly 1%. If you're using single keywords, this is generally not enough to grab the attention of the search engines.

Having the right keyword density on your content is essential. It often marks the difference between the success and failure of a website. Having a keyword density which is too low is not optimal for the search engines and it can hurt your marketing campaign. On the other hand, having a keyword density which is too high will make your content appear low-quality and your visitors will be quickly turned away. Google firmly advises web designers and content writers to write for people and not for the search engines. However, the reality is that you should find a compromise which allows you to provide high quality content for your visitors while boosting your search engine exposure at the same time.

The maximum keyword density of a single word should be no more than 5%, although this is more of a guideline than a set-in-stone rule. Avoid keyword spam at all costs. In fact, the average reader should not even be able to notice that your content is search engine optimized.

Another thing to consider is long-tail keywords. These are actually key-phrases consisting of anything from two to five words. These are much better for SEO since there's much less competition. If you are using long-tail keywords in your content, you certainly don't want to be using them with a 5% density! Generally, a long-tail keyword should be used once every hundred to two-hundred words and in the title of the page. So long as your content looks natural, readable and provides something of value to your visitors, you can include as much SEO as you want.
