Some online business owners try to save money by choosing to host their sites with free web hosts. However, there are a few drawbacks to doing this. This article lists factors that business owners should consider before choosing a free web host.

Not Free Hosting

Got a Business Website? Think Twice Before Choosing a Free Web Host!

As an online business owner, financial savings is one of your top priorities. You want to give your business the widest exposure at the lowest possible cost. This is why some new business owners choose to use free web hosts for their business websites. But is free web hosting really the best choice? The answer depends on many factors, and will not be the same for all online businesses.

Obviously, the most attractive feature of free web hosts is the fact that you don’t need to pay anything to have your website hosted there. Unlike paid web hosting providers who charge monthly or annual fees, free web hosts allow you to use their servers free of charge. However, you have to think about the revenue you could potentially lose from having a slow website. You may think you're saving money on web hosting fees but in the long run, you'll be losing a lot more in terms of potential customers who are unable to access your website or complete their orders.

Connection Speed

Visitors to your business website should be able to enjoy fast browsing. It's a huge turn-off if your business website frequently stops downloading or takes several minutes to load. Free web hosts are severely limited when it comes to speed, and even more so when there are several users sharing the same server. Can you afford to make your visitors -- potential customers -- wait?

Disk Space

The amount of disk space offered by free web hosts is generally limited. While paid web hosts offer limited disk space also, it is considerably more than the amount of space offered by free web hosts, allowing you to store more files for your website.

Data Security

Free web hosts claim to have some kind of data security measure in place. Still, since they are offering a free service, you can't be entirely sure of your data's safety on their servers. And, if the company suddenly decides to stop offering free web hosting for whatever reason, you risk losing your data.

Companies offering free web hosting aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. There's a catch. They generate income from advertisers whose banners and links are displayed on your website. Some business owners don't seem to mind these advertisements but if you find them to be annoying or distracting to your customers, you're better off signing up for paid web hosting.

To sum up, if you don't mind the downtime and you only expect low traffic on your business website, signing up with a free web host may be the best choice. However, as your business grows and your customer base expands, consider upgrading to paid web hosting.
