Starting an online business seems like a fairly straightforward process, and for the most part it is. You must reserve a catchy domain name, establish hosting services, set up a design for the website and then take it from there. However, once the website is up you might experience a number of challenges as a new online business owner.
Ongoing Site Maintenance
Once you set up a business site online you must maintain it regularly. That includes updating crucial information, such as prices for an online store, fixing design flaws and responding to emails from potential customers. In some cases you may have to make an all-day commitment to monitoring your site's business and fulfilling orders. If you sell a service, you cannot let more than 24-48 hours go by without responding to your clients or you might as well not respond at all.
If you cannot make this commitment you should hire someone who can do it for you. Set up a reliable smartphone account to receive emails...

Earlier this year there was a significant amount of commotion in the online world when business websites were hit where it hurts them the most, namely in their search engine results. Google search engine updates with names like Panda and Penguin had a detrimental effect on the page ranking of what the company deems to be over-optimized or spammy websites. While this should have been good news to website owners who follow Google's best practice guidelines carefully, even they are not safe thanks to the increased chance of being hurt by so-called negative SEO (search engine optimization).

Less than a decade ago, the Internet was far less interactive than it is now and much fewer people had access to it as well. Roll on the past few years and things like social media and cloud services have taken the virtual world by storm. When it comes to promoting a website, there is a great deal more to do than a little search engine optimization to build up a decent amount of traffic to your site. As the virtual world evolves, Internet marketing is becoming more and more versatile and there are many elements which are simply too important to ignore. Social media is one of the main reasons that most people use the Internet. Of the various types of social media marketing, there is social bookmarking.
What is Social Bookmarking?
Today, the Internet is all about sharing information. Social bookmarking is one of the most important elements of this. An example of social bookmarking is when someone posts a link to a webpage on Facebook or on another social...
Creating and maintaining a blog is a lot of work. Rather than letting that work go down the drain, put to work certain practices that will increase the number of visitors going to your blog. Remember, the more visitors your blog receives the more you spread your ideas around the Internet and the world.
Follow and comment on other blogs. You need to seek out other blogs that are interesting to you. It is best if these blogs are at least somewhat related to the subject matter of your blog. Instead of just reading the posts on these blogs, regularly leave comments and engage the blog owner and other visitors in genuine conversations. Your comments cannot revolve around telling everyone about your blog, or you will be ignored or even blocked by the blog owners. List on your user profile the address of your blog, or add it to your signature so it shows up each time you leave a comment.
Use optimized language, while still making it natural to read. SEO or...
You've found a great product and you've built or paid for a beautiful online store. You have a quality payment processor, a secure site, and stunning mouth watering product photos that are going to make people hungry to buy. The problem is that there's nobody around to appreciate any of this. You need to get customers. Luckily there are a number of methods that you can use.
The simplest way to get people to your site is to pay for advertising. There are programs set up to allow you to bid on certain keywords that people type into the search engines. When a user types in a phrase that you bid on, and your bid is higher than other people advertising for the same words, they will see an ad of your choosing that will link back to that product.
The administrative interface gives you a lot of tools to help you focus and control your advertising campaign. You can set up different campaigns, and limit your daily budget for each campaign. You can also control the...
Earlier the 24th, around 10 am EST, we received an email from a Gmail user saying something like "I WILL KILL YOUR SITE - PAY **** to **** OR I WILL KILL YOUR SITE". We thought it was a joke, an hour later, we were hit with a denial-of-service attack targeting all our services. And it was a pretty hard one.
Our Website went offline for about 18 hours while they were attacking. We started working immediately to mitigate the attack and applied several rules to stop it. The attack lasted until the next morning, although we were able to reinstate the Website that night.
Now, as our main Website runs under CloudFlare's network and they automatically block any strange behavior, you may get a captcha challenge if you are browsing too fast or if your computer is compromised with a Virus (while the current security level is set to "HIGH", which we are planning to downgrade once everything is cooled down).
We are hoping this does not happen again, however,...
Most business owners know they need to keep up with their websites, provide content and reach as big an audience as possible to pull in more customers and sales. Large businesses have the clear advantage as vast resources allow for mass marketing. Businesses capable of shelling out big bucks in this department can best the search engine rankings and beat the traffic. But small businesses are often unable to fork over funds into marketing and their web content gets lost in shuffles of pages behind big businesses. However using the best and most up to date SEO (Search Engine Optimization) content and analysis can tip the tides. SEO is constantly changing, and a new web tool, SEO Recon 2012, has just altered the landscape.
Big vs. Small
Small businesses need to understand SEO if they are going to beat out big chains. Search engines do not account for a businesses’ value, ideas, customer service or any number of the elements that often help small...
Website owners are always looking for ways to boost traffic for their website. The problem is, the traffic on the internet is in a bit of a jam. In February 2011, Google made a change to the search algorithm. This change was coined as "Google Panda". Old search engine strategies became obsolete, and a storm of complaints surged in from websites all throughout cyberspace. Old tactics like stuffing key words into articles were no longer effective because the search engine was now "smarter". Marketing experts are crafty, though, and the technique known as article backlinking was popularized.
The three ways to attract traffic
There are only three ways for people to find your website: word of mouth, search engine searches, and backlinks. Backlinks are simply links that direct traffic to a specific location. Any time you see a link on a website that brings you to a different website, you have found a backlink. The technique to backlinking is to...
Link building is one of the most important factors behind your search engine rankings. In general, the more links you have pointing to your website and the higher quality those links, the better your website will perform in the search engines. Without incoming links your website will struggle to rank for profitable keywords, and it may not even rank at all. Today you are going to learn three link building strategies that will help you get first page rankings for your website. These proven methods won't put your website at risk of being penalized for SEO malpractice.
One of the most powerful strategies you can use to build a strong incoming link profile is to engage actively in guest blogging. This is where you make posts on blogs owned by other webmasters and bloggers, in exchange for links back to your website. Usually, these links come in the form of “resource box” links, where you post a little blurb about yourself and your...
