After Google Penguin was released in waves, each wave brought a new level of heightened panic to internet webmasters. The ones whose sites had been punished by the update were frantic to regain rankings, while those who had been boosted were ecstatic and wondered how to keep these rankings.
One thing is certain from Google's press about Penguin and unofficial statements: they are moving towards promoting high-engagement, highly-targeted websites that offer specific answers to user queries. After all, a search engine wants to quickly deliver results so people don't have to click through many results.
Here are three of the best types of pages to have on your websites, post-Penguin updates.
1. Pages with lots of content.
Thin informational sites often suffer from Google updates, as Google has expressed a desire to eliminate “spammy” pages that are ad-centered and offer limited information. If you want to stay on Google's...
You've found a great product and you've built or paid for a beautiful online store. You have a quality payment processor, a secure site, and stunning mouth watering product photos that are going to make people hungry to buy. The problem is that there's nobody around to appreciate any of this. You need to get customers. Luckily there are a number of methods that you can use.
The simplest way to get people to your site is to pay for advertising. There are programs set up to allow you to bid on certain keywords that people type into the search engines. When a user types in a phrase that you bid on, and your bid is higher than other people advertising for the same words, they will see an ad of your choosing that will link back to that product.
The administrative interface gives you a lot of tools to help you focus and control your advertising campaign. You can set up different campaigns, and limit your daily budget for each campaign. You can also control the...
Earlier this month, Google unveiled the Knowledge Graph, a new search feature that allows users to immediately get the basic information about certain queries right from the search results page. No more clicking through Wikipedia or encyclopedia websites just to find key facts about something or someone; with the Knowledge Graph, you should be able to get the information you need as soon as you hit the search button.
Available on desktop computers, smartphones, and tablets, the Knowledge Graph appears at the right-hand side of Google’s search results page and it provides a snapshot of what a particular query is all about. For instance, if you search for Steve Jobs (see image above), the knowledge graph will display a quick summary of who he is, together with basic facts including his birthday, the day he died, his wife, children, etc.
Follows the footsteps of Amazon
Google’s Knowledge Graph also borrows a feature from Amazon by...
Google’s Penguin update has created a storm of controversy that threatens to permanently damage its reputation. Thousands of honest webmasters are up in arms after seeing their traffic disappear after the update. Many are calling for the search engine to be regulated as a monopoly.
The Penguin update, launched on April 24 2012, was designed to punish websites that relied on excessive back linking, keyword stuffing and exact match key terms. Google claims that Penguin only affected 3.1% of searches and only hit websites that contravened its existing quality guidelines. The devastating results of the update suggest that its impact was far more widespread.
Since April 24 thousands of quality websites have tumbled down Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs) to be replaced by poor quality rivals with little or no valuable content. Many affected site owners are adamant that they have never used any of the techniques that Google...
